Michael films himself with a camcorder

Michael is 20, chronically online, and socially isolated in a college town.

dani
While filming strangers as "social experiments," he develops a connection with Dani, a free-spirited bookstore clerk.

In his dreams, she kisses him first.

In flashback, 6-year-old Michael's father teaches him to make women uncomfortable by staring. At night, he's haunted by fragmented memories of his violent childhood - small vignettes that shed light on the roots of his alienation.
A queer basketball league in a school gym

Dani brings Michael to her queer basketball league. At first he finds community and purpose in Dani's politically active friend group,

but after she rejects him, his grip on reality loosens, plummeting

He becomes convinced Dani is leaving him hidden messages online.

Tormented by memories of his father's conditioning,

Michael stalks Dani with his camera.

What starts as a crush curdles into something much darker.

True Blue blends gritty realism with moments of surreal lyricism and secondhand embarrassment - set against the verisimilitude of screens, authentic references, and young-adult self-consciousness.

Tonally, think of True Blue as a Gen Z Taxi Driver.

Style & tone

The same way Scorsese forces you to sit inside Travis Bickle's POV before you understand what he's becoming, this film asks its audience to relate to Michael first.

I'm also inspired by Eighth Grade, where verisimilitude - the texture of screens, authentic references, young-adult self-consciousness - evokes a loose, spontaneous approach that catches life as it happens rather than staging it.

The scenes themselves don't demand complicated setups - we are excited to be nimble, handheld, rough around the edges. It all lends to the feeling of something candid, like we captured private moments of something real.

Having to cram this into a pressure cooker is what is going to give it urgency. The sweat on Michael's brow will be real.

Why this film

Growing up, I felt completely repulsive. Like something was fundamentally broken in me that women could smell from across the room.

Nearly all of the flashbacks with Michael's father in the film are things that happened to me as a child. My father taught me to swim by nearly drowning me. He taught me to make women uncomfortable by staring at them. He did these things because it's how he was raised - the son of a Greek soldier. Though I hated him for these things for many years, I now know, he loved me in the way that he could. He thought he was making me a stronger man.

True Blue is the film I needed when I was a teenager, sitting next to a friend whose rage felt like kinship. Something to help me understand the isolation I was feeling, to have some constructive perspective for my troubled friend.

I would have seen a film like this, and identified myself in it. And I would not have liked what I saw in the mirror.

Intention

Boys inherit these cycles of violence, and these malignant ways of relating to women, because the fathers that pass it down frequently think they're offering their sons an expression of love - however distorted that may be.

This film isn't looking to forgive or to explain away, but to authentically reflect the consequences of the male loneliness epidemic.

You can't *dismantle something if you don't *understand it.

It's for viewers who want to understand a man like this, without letting him off the hook.

My hope is that viewers will walk away with a deeper understanding of the cultural conditioning that modern young men face, and those who see themselves identified in this work may be stirred to seek help, early enough to matter.
